Sullivan, brown illustrated paper over board over green quarter-cloth to spine, featuring a repeated black illustration of a Native American to front and back, black lettering to paper label pasted to spine, minor wear to panels, edges, and tips, light soiling to front and back panels and page 40, deckled-edges, otherwise, sharp tips, tightly bound, and unmarked throughout. Signed and dated by Foreword author, Joseph A. Sullivan to back page in blue pen: "[signature] 3/1/48." xii + 2, 149 pp., replete with full-color and black-and-white images, fold-out map, Foreword by John A. Sullivan, Preface and 11 chapters of text by Friedrich Gerstaecker. From the Foreword: "This writer's description of the towns and men of the period of the gold rush is unexcelled.
