Rabelais, Francois, Walter Klinefelter (Translator and Annotator). Catalogue of the Choice Books found by Pantagruel in the Abbey of Saint Victor. San Francisco: Grabhorn Press, 1952
English First Edition, RARE, 8vo, 10 1/2" x 8."
Very Good, First Edition, RARE, 8vo. Green paper-covered boards backed with light brown cloth. Gilt lettering on green paper spine label. Covers have some smoke and water damage mostly limited to the edges and bits of white paper stuck on the front and back fore-edges, else clean and intact, binding tight. Pages are clean and intact overall but also have some smoke and water damage toward the edges; text is unaffected. Rare in the trade. 83 pp. Printed on title page: "Printed for William P. Wreden of Burlingame, California, mcmlii." Back colophon: "Two hundred copies printed at the Grabhorn Press, San Francisco, in June mcmxxxxxii." William P. Wreden (1910-1995) was an American book collector and book dealer. This edition was printed for Wreden. 200 copies were originally printed by the Grabhorn Press, but tragically, a fire broke out at Wreden's bookshop and only 75 copies are known to remain. This copy is one of the surviving 75. "Catalogue of the Choice Books found by Pantagruel in the Abbey of Saint Victor" is a satirical book catalog that ties in with Francois Rabelais's famous satire, "The Life of Gargantua and Pantagruel." Commentary by Walter Klinefelter accompanies each of Rabelais's imaginary book titles in the catalog.
