Strong, Roy. London: Thames and Hudson, 1987.
English, first edition hardcover 4to 10 3/8" x 7 1/2", 180 pp.
Very Good 4to in red cloth with gilt Thames and Hudson insignia to front, gilt title to spine, text in English, black-and-white images throughout, four in full-color. Dust jacket with color portrait to front, black spine with white title. Some bumping to head and foot, some foxing to top edge. Mild crease from pages 150-180 not affecting text. Jacket has one mark to front, some edgewear, protected by Brodart sleeve. Commissioned portraits of Elizabeth I served many purposes: to align her with the divine, to assure her seat on the throne, to win her the love of her subjects, to inspire fear in her enemies. Roy Strong steps through the phases of her reign, exploring art by famous Renaissance artists like Nicholas Hilliard and Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger to illuminate one of the most powerful women in history. A fascinating read, and a smart, sharp copy.
