Illustrated short story by Edward Gorey (1925-2000), an American author, illustrator, and costume designer, filled with his signature sense of ironic, macabre humor. The story follows two seemingly disparate realms; one of wealth and theater celebrity, and the other of poverty and a longing to be a part of that world. From front flap: "An opera book without libretto or score, which nevertheless portrays the tragedy of unrequited love, the peril of fame, the intrigue of backstage life, the nefarious scheming of the very rich, and a profound moral."
