Rick Barton, (1918-1992) was only recently discovered as a significant figure in the San Francisco Beat era, a queer artist whose work was deeply influenced by his time in Asia when he served in the military. Barton captured the bohemian North Beach cafe culture with his unique and often surreal line drawings.  Barton suffered from mental illness and fell into obscurity in the 70s, but due to the foresight of printer and publisher, Henry Evans, Barton's abandoned work was donated to UCLA and later exhibited at The Morgan Library & Museum in 2022.

David Archer Nelson (1941-) is a working artist who was mentored by Barton in the 60s. He is a reverse glass painter and sculptor whose work has been featured in Start Trek, National Geographic and book cover designs for Issac Asimov and Larry Niven.
