Very Good + slipcase, brown with cream and brown title affixed to spine, mild sunning along open end, minor shelfwear to bottom and top edges. Illustrations by Lajos Szalay with 10 full-page paintings in tempera and 16 black-and-white line drawings. Translations by Constance Garnett. Selected and introduced by Helen Muchnic. Chekhov’s short stories, celebrated for their subtle realism and psychological depth, are complemented in this edition by Lajos Szalay, the renowned Hungarian graphic artist chosen for his expressive line work and modernist sensibility.
The Limited Editions Club was founded by publisher George Macy in 1929 with goal of delivering a monthly fine press edition of great works in literature, religion, history, philosophy, and poetry. The press worked with some of the best printers in the US and Europe, and sought the best artists to illustrate runs of 1500 or 2000 copies.
