Near Fine quarto, cherry-red and black cloth over boards, backed in capeskin stamped in gilt, red top edge, deckled pages. Laid in loose is the Monthly Letter of The Limited Editions Club number 392 (slightly creased) and information sheet on print and binding. Very Good slipcase, red with gilt title, some shelfwear, sunning along open end, 188 pp. Illustrations by Hungarian Graphic Designer Lajos Szalay with 8 full-page paintings in tempera and 16 black-and-white line drawings. Translations by Constance Garnett. Introduction by Sir John Gielgud. Chekhov’s final and most influential plays, Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard, whose themes of social change, loss, and the decline of the Russian aristocracy are enhanced by Lajos Szalay’s expressive modernist illustrations.
The Limited Editions Club was founded by publisher George Macy in 1929 with goal of delivering a monthly fine press edition of great works in literature, religion, history, philosophy, and poetry. The press worked with some of the best printers in the US and Europe, and sought the best artists to illustrate runs of 1500 or 2000 copies.
