Notes: Good, First American Edition, First Printing, 8vo, 5 3/4" x 8 1/2." Lacks dust jacket. White cloth-covered boards with foil lettering in yellow, pink, blue, and green on spine. Covers have rubbing, a few smudges, and slight bumping toward head of spine, else clean and intact, binding tight. Pages clean and intact overall. There is copious dampstaining along the bottom edge and fore-edge of text block, but it does not affect text and is limited to interior page margins. 416 pp. Tom Wolfe's famous "nonfiction novel" about Ken Kesey and his band of Merry Pranksters as they travel across the United States in their rainbow-colored school bus, Furthur. Ken Kesey (1935-2001) was an American author and leading figure of the 1960s countercultural movement. Although he did not consider himself a Beatnik or hippie, Kesey had a significant influence upon "hippie counterculture." Kesey and his group of friends, the Merry Pranksters, gained fame and notoriety for their "Acid Tests," LSD-infused parties accented by multimedia performances. Kesey also wrote the critically acclaimed novel, _One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest_. On the unique style of writing in this book, Wolfe says in the Author's Note, "I have tried not only to tell what the pranksters did but to re-create the mental atmosphere or subjective reality of it."
