Ken Kesey (1935-2001) was an American author and leading figure of the 1960s countercultural movement. Although he did not consider himself a Beatnik or hippie, Kesey had a significant influence upon "hippie counterculture." Kesey and his group of friends, the Merry Pranksters, gained fame and notoriety for their "Acid Tests," LSD-infused parties accented by multimedia performances. Kesey also wrote the critically acclaimed novel, _One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest_. On the unique style of writing in this book, Wolfe says in the Author's Note, "I have tried not only to tell what the pranksters did but to re-create the mental atmosphere or subjective reality of it."
