This artist book developed out of a series of works in which Richter responds to events connected with the Beider-Meinhof group, or the RAF (Red Army Faction) and the post-war chaos in Germany. The mystery surround the deaths of the radical group's members at Stammheim compelled Richter to create two bodies of work: a monochromes series called 18 Oktober, 1977 and the 23 works on paper, reproduced in this volume at actual size. Using Pieter H. Baaker Schut's exposé, Stammheim: the Case Against the RAF as a substrate, the artist employs his famous spread and scrape technique, an act of both obscuring and uncovering. A powerful piece of history in the hands of an artist who lived through the Nazi occupation, Communism, and the avant-garde movement that accompanied a burgeoning democracy. Scarce in the trade in such excellent condition.
