Full title of Volume Two: Ida Shoichi/Paper Works/Surface is the Between/Descended Level/Between Vertical and Horizon-Garden Project-Locus Sutra/1983-1988/Vol. II. Some soiling to edges, spine, and hinge, light toning, faint bend to bottom fore edge, one brown liquid stain to center front cover hinge, else perfectly clean, tightly bound, and unmarked throughout. Vol. II is bound in stiff glossy cream textured wraps with 4" diameter die-cut circle in front cover bordered by facsimile sketch marks, white on black titling visible through a translucent vellum endpaper, facsimile thumbprint to center fore edge front and back, black lettering to spine, facsimile circular sketch to back cover. Some light toning to edges, light soiling to spine and back cover hinge, light bend to bottom fore edge, else clean, tightly bound, unmarked throughout, and showing no other visible wear. Very good black paper slipcase, white lettering to spine and cover, bumped head and foot of spine, some wear to bottom edge, closed tear to open end, top and bottom, else clean, intact, and showing no other visible wear. Vol.I is 107 pp. including a full-page black-and-white photograph of the artist taken by Hashimoto Fumiyoshi, an article by Yoshiaki Inui providing context for Shoichi Ida's series, "Descended Level", a Chronological Biography, Plates in both black-and-white and full-color, and the Catalogue Raisonne for works produced from 1978-82 replete with black-and-white images (a note states that more than 50 pieces were not included for various reasons). Vol. II is 146 pp. and includes a full-page black-and-white photograph of the artist in 1988 also by Hashimoto Fumiyoshi, an article by Kenneth Baker on Ida Shoichi's "Garden Project-Locus Sutra" further speculating on the use of the Latin word Locus (place) aside an allusion to the Lotus Sutra, an article by Yoshiaki Inui on the "Karma" paper works, Plates rendered in sumptuous full-color, a Catalogue Raisonne covering 1983-88 with black-and-white images (a note states 150 works are missing), a Selected Chronological Biography, and a Selected Bibliography. Volume II also includes a poem by the artist on his relationship to fossils, and a short, but rare, first-person statement on the concept of "Surface is the Between" on the last free end paper. These are precious insight into the philosophical impetus and creative drive behind these beautiful and enigmatic works by a monumentally influential, though notoriously publicity-averse, artist. Heavy and oversized items may require additional shipping.
