No date, circa 1867. Very Good green flexible cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on front, no lettering to spine. Covers have slight wear to extremities, two small indentations and some dampstaining at bottom on front, else clean and intact. Pages have light age toning and slight foxing and there is a former owner's ink inscription on front pastedown, else clean and intact. One black-and-white etched illustration (artist's portrait) and 11 black-and-white plates included. "Presented to each Member of the Art Union of Glasgow for the year 1866-67." Beautiful, complete collection of etchings made W. B. Scott, the brother of the late David Scott (1806-1849), a Scottish painter. David was a painter of historical and mythological scenes. Contained herein is a concise biographical account of David's life and brief descriptions (parts of which were penned by David himself) of the 12 etchings in this book. 11 of the etching are full-page. The first etching is a vignette portrait of David Scott on the title page. The remaining etchings were made by W. B. Scott after the original paintings by David. The titles of the 11 full-page etchings are "Peter the Hermit Preaching the Crusades," "Hope Appearing to the Afflicted," "The Alchymical Adept Lecturing on the Elixir Vitae," "Robert the Bruce Watching Lights from the Carrick Coast," "Queen Elizabeth Viewing the Performance of the Merry Wives of Windsor," "Achilles Addressing the Manes of Patroclus," "Mary Queen of Scots at the Place of Her Execution," "The Triumph of Love," "Drake on the Quarter-Deck," "Richard III and the Princes," and "Oberon Listening to the Mermaid's Song."
