The Clayton Brothers are an artist-sibling duo based in Los Angeles. Rob Clayton (b. 1963) and Christian Clayton (b. 1967) both graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, where they both currently teach illustration. They started working together in the mid 90s, handing canvases back and forth, developing a shared autobiographical vocabulary and a sense of play. Using mixed media and found images, they create characters and spaces inflected with sideshow posters and early advertisements. The extemporaneous joy transmits onto the canvas, reenacting the weirdness of childhood with vibratory nostalgia. The Clayton Brothers are associated with the lowbrow and pop surreal movements coming out of La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles and Last Gasp in San Francisco.
