Includes many printed photos showing the retreat's gardens and architecture. Hakone Garden is one of the oldest Japanese-style gardens in the Western Hemisphere. The gardens came into existence when two art patrons from San Francisco, Oliver and Isabel Stine, commissioned Japanese architects and landscape designers to build a private summer retreat in Saratoga. Isabel wanted the garden to resemble Fugi-Hakone-Izu National Park in Japan. Construction for the retreat began in 1917 and was completed in 1929. Over the years, additions to the garden have been made with the most recent one, the Cultural Exchange Center, having been completed in 1991.
