Near Fine quarto, three-piece binding is in dark brown buckram and gray-green rough finish cloth, the former extending 1/3 beyond the shelfback on both sides, gilt lettering to spine. Laid in loose is the Monthly Letter of the Limited Editions Club number 419 and information paper on print and binding. Very Good + slipcase, blue/green with black lettering to spine, sunning along open end, very slight staining, 238 pp. Illustrated by John Groth with 16 pages of full-color illustrations divided into 2 portfolios: 1 of 12 and 1 of 4 pages, bound in the book, 50 in-text line drawings. Translation by A.W. Wheen. Introduction by Harry Hanses. Remarque's wrenching World War I novel accompanied by John Groth’s vivid depictions of youthful idealism crushed by the merciless realities of trench warfare.
The Limited Editions Club was founded by publisher George Macy in 1929 with goal of delivering a monthly fine press edition of great works in literature, religion, history, philosophy, and poetry. The press worked with some of the best printers in the US and Europe, and sought the best artists to illustrate runs of 1500 or 2000 copies.
