Brothers Grimm, Hartford: Case, Lockwood & Brainard for the Limited Editions Club, 1962, #1393/1500, Near Fine octavo, Illustrated and SIGNED by Lucille Corcos.
Near Fine octavo, 10 1/4" x 7 1/4", hardcovers in white linen with green ink all-over pattern of leaves and painted green top edges. Three out of the four limited edition set of 211 classic fairytales by the German academics, Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm, known collectively as the Brothers Grimm. Each volume is sectioned into the largest theme or genre. Illustrated with 48 color and 53 monochrome green drawings by Lucille Corcos, a Jewish American, modern primitivist artist who specialized in urban scenes. Edited by Louis and Bryna Untermeyer, with a Foreword by Louis. An essay by Andrew Lang. Signed by Corcos at the colophon of Volume Four.
Volume Two: "Magic and Spells". This volume has very light wear to tail. 304 pp. (pages 215-482). The original glassine is present in Good condition. Very Good slipcase green paper with tan title label featuring an illustration of two children and dark green lettering to spine, some sunning, light soiling to top and bottom edge, small dot to front panel, small left to bottom corner of title label, else attractive. The future release notice letter for Volumes I and II is presented as one sheet, laid in and in Near Fine condition.
Volume Three: "Hidden Heroes and Heroines," "Odd Narratives and Tall Tales," and "Fools, Sluggards, Wise Folks, and Busy People". Near Fine volume with a small dot to page viii. 270 pp. ( pages 487-720). Very Good slipcase in green paper with tan title label featuring a small illustration of the three figures and dark green lettering to spine, some sunning and minor soiling to bottom and top edges. The future release notice letter for Volumes III and IV is presented as one sheet, laid in, folded in half, and in Near Fine condition.
Volume Four: "Death and the Devil," "Moralities," and "Animals and Inanimates". Near Fine volume with a slightly cocked spine. 244 pp. (pages 727-934). The original glassine is present Good condition. Very Good slipcase in green paper with tan title label featuring a small illustration and dark green lettering to spine, some sunning and minor soiling to bottom edge.
The Limited Editions Club was founded by publisher George Macy in 1929 with goal of delivering a monthly fine press edition of great works in literature, religion, history, philosophy, and poetry. The press worked with some of the best printers in the US and Europe, and sought the best artists to illustrate runs of 1500 or 2000 copies.
