Near Fine octavo, 10 1/2" x 7 3/4". Hardcover with black-and-white pictorial vellum cloth with pinboard illustrations, over dark blue cowhide backing with stamped gilt lettering and borders, and blue speckled text block edges. Slight tinge of pink and blue throughout text block, possibly transferred from images. Very minor spots of soiling to fore edge and small pressure indentation to spine. Very Good red slipcase, gray title label to spine with black lettering and stippling, minor sunning, some shelf wear and light marks, possibly paint from shelves, to top and bottom edges.
Beautifully designed edition of the combined short novel The Gambler (1866), and the novella Notes from Underground (1864) by the widely influential Russian existential novelist, Fyodor Dostoevsky, which displays his literary range from depictions of love and obsession, to nihilistic and ideological discourse. Accompanied by eighty-one pages of monochrome, pinscreen illustrations, with both single-page and double spreads, by Russian-born artist, Alexandre Alexeieff, in collaboration with American engineer and animator, Claire Parker. Decorative lettering and titles are etchings by Peter Johnson. Includes an Introduction by American literary critic and essayist George Steiner. Translated by Constance Garnett. Signed by Alexeieff on the copyright page. The Monthly Newsletter, No. 399, is laid-in and present in Near Fine condition, and half-sheet in Very Good condition with a number in pen written to the back.
The Limited Editions Club was founded by publisher George Macy in 1929 with goal of delivering a monthly fine press edition of great works in literature, religion, history, philosophy, and poetry.
