Near Fine octavo, 9 1/2" x 6 1/2", hardcover in blue paper over black cloth backing, stamped gilt lettering to spine. Very light wear to tail and faint white soiling to front panel. Very Good+ slipcase in blue paper over navy cloth, some wear to tips, light soiling to one side panel, and minor sunning to other side panel.
v-xxxiii + 2-129 pp. Rainer Maria Rilke's body of work, including poems from Das Buch der Bilder (The Book of Pictures), Neue Gedichte: Erster Teil (New Poems: First Part), and Neue Gedichte: Anderer Teil (New Poems: Another Part). Illustrated with the lithographs by American painter and printmaker, Robert Kipniss. Includes an Introduction by the American poet and translator, C.F. MacIntyre, a Preface by African-American educator and civil rights leader, Harry T. Moore, and Notes. Signed by Kipniss to the copyright page. Original glassine present in Good+ condition, some chipping to top edge.
The Limited Editions Club was founded by publisher George Macy in 1929 with goal of delivering a monthly fine press edition of great works in literature, religion, history, philosophy, and poetry. The press worked with some of the best printers in the US and Europe, and sought the best artists to illustrate runs of 1500 or 2000 copies.
