Hesse, Hermann, Mount Vernon, New York: A. Colish, 1977, #1393/1600, Fine, 4to, 8 ¼” x 11 ¾”, 181. Illustrated by Helmut Ackermann, SIGNED by Helmut Ackermann

Fine quarto, grey cloth over boards with black leather spine, gilt to spine, original monthly newsletter dated January 1977, number 507, laid in loose. Near Fine slipcase, brown with slight sunning to edges, original glassine, 181 pp. The black-and-white illustrations are woodcuts created by Helmut Ackermann.

A seminal novel exploring existential themes like identity, inner conflict, and alienation, enriched by Helmut Ackermann’s intricate woodcuts that deepen the narrative. Deeply autobiographical, the novel reflects Hesse’s struggles and philosophy, with protagonist Harry Haller serving as a mirror of the author himself.

The Limited Editions Club was founded by publisher George Macy in 1929 with the goal of delivering a monthly fine press edition of great works in literature, religion, history, philosophy, and poetry. The press worked with some of the best printers in the US and Europe, and sought the best artists to illustrate runs of 1500 or 2000 copies. Amatoria has acquired ~100 Limited Edition Club titles, to see more, visit the collection on our website.
