Near Fine quarto, wood veneer boards with green Moroccan backing, gilt design and lettering, mild sunning to head, otherwise pristine. Original glassine present with some chipping and tearing at front top hinge. Very Good + slipcase in wood veneer, gilt lettering and design to spine, some chipping to veneer at bottom edge, still handsome and functional. 362 pp. In-text black-and-white drawings by Fritz Kredel. Preface by Ashley Montagu. Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection expands with The Descent of Man, which argues that humans share a common ancestry with other animals and explores how evolution, including sexual selection, shaped human biology and behavior. German-born illustrator and woodcut artist Fritz Kredel renders finely detailed examples of animals and humans in this striking collection.
The Limited Editions Club was founded by publisher George Macy in 1929 with goal of delivering a monthly fine press edition of great works in literature, religion, history, philosophy, and poetry. The press worked with some of the best printers in the US and Europe, and sought the best artists to illustrate runs of 1500 or 2000 copies. Amatoria has acquired ~100 Limited Edition Club titles, to see more, visit the collection on our website.
