Elizabeth Catlett (1915-2012) was a seminal sculptor, printmaker, and teacher in the African-American Figurative Movement of the 20th Century. She blended ancient, expressionist, often personal portraiture with the social and political, actively developing a new Black iconography. An alum of Howard University and the University of Iowa, Catlett traveled extensively in Mexico, which deeply informed her process as a printmaker, muralist, and painter. Influenced by Diego Rivera, she embraced a socialist ethos that strove to redefine labor and basic human rights, in part due to her participation in the WPA project. In the 1950s, she was investigated by the House Un-American Activities Committee and in 1962, she ex-patriated to Mexico. Her work has shown in New York, London, Mexico City, and recently at Black American Portraits at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art alongside the Obama Presidential Portraits.
