Blue cloth over boards, one very minor ding to board edge, gilt titling to front panel and spine, no dust jacket as issued, minor smudge to text block edge, otherwise pristine. Collection of short stories by the Moroccan artist and storyteller whose style derives from an ancient oral tradition. Mohammed Mrabet (1936-) grew up in Tangier where he worked as a fisherman, laborer, and boxer, traveling through Spain and Mallorca. Never having attended school or learned to write, he met author Paul Bowles and his wife Jane Bowles who convinced him to record, transcribe, and translate his spoken stories. This collection is one of dozens of stories that Bowles produced and published, introducing Mrabet to American and European audiences, revealing the complex dynamic between East and West. Mrabet would later say that Bowles exploited him and took credit for his stories. This is nonetheless an excellent copy of his boldly imaginative work.
