Finn, David. New York: Ruder-Finn Press, Inc., 2005.
English Language, Near Fine HC quarto 10 1/2" x 11," 250 pp.
ISBN: 1932646175
Red cloth over boards, titling blind stamped to front cover and spine, very light wear to tips and edges, otherwise perfectly clean, and tightly bound. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by the artist on the half-title page: "Nov. 26 - 2006 To Edward and Joy all the best Fletcher." Pictorial dustjacket featuring Fletcher Benton's sculpture to the front panel and a photo portrait of the artist to the back panel, white titling to front and spine, some rubbing, creasing to edges, else clean, intact, not price clipped, and protected by a paper-backed mylar sleeve. 250 pp. replete with David Finn's full-color photographs of Fletcher Benton's sculptural work. Includes a sculptor's note, a biography, a bibliography, and images divided into segments: Alphabets, Numerals, and Installations. In the artist's own words: "I discovered long ago that the rhythms in our letterforms are just as dynamic as the negative spaces they encompass. My challenge was confining this to a square and at the same time, hopefully, creating an interesting sculpture." Brilliantly photographed by the premier sculpture photographer David Finn (1921-2021), this abcedaria acts as both a collaborative project between sculptor and viewer, and also as a peek into the mind of sculptor and viewer both manipulating forms toward a more poetic vision. Many of the images are accompanied by short stanzas of David Finn's observational poetry.
