Published in conjunction with an exhibition of the same name held at Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento from January 26 to May 5, 2013. From the essay: "Abstract modes of painting, drawing and sculpting were a constant throughout the 20th century, climaxing by 1960. The next chapter of painting and drawing from 1969 to the present is considerably polymorphous, characterized by social critique and rhetorically rich stylistic returns to recognizable imagery...{A]bstraction in this exhibition is less revitalization and more a sifting of the implications artistic minds see in the verbal description of systems".
