This issue of _Contact Sheet_ highlights the work of American photographer John Gossage (b. 1946) that appeared in his book, _Berlin in the Time of the Wall_. Gossage first began taking photos of the Berlin Wall in 1982 as a way to address the emotional and psychological trauma brought about by the splitting of East and West Berlin. He returned over subsequent years into the 1990s to continue documenting the wall. Through his photos, Gossage wanted to visually show how seemingly mundane objects, such as the Berlin Wall itself, can harbor feelings of deep emotion, pain, and suffering.
