Tall 4to, 12" x 10," persimmon cloth over boards, black titling to spine, sharp tips, minor foxing to top edge, former owner's name on taupe endpaper. Interior clean, tightly bound. Very Good pictorial dust wrapper, minor wear and scuffing, but still glossy, mylar protected. Includes contributions from John Cage and James Merrill, in addirion to Tanning's own writing, 214 full-color plates of the artist's works, photos by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Man Ray, and Brigette Lacombe. 404 pp., including Artist Chronology, biographical photos, Solo Exhibitions, Book Illustrations, Theatrical Productions, Bibliography, Selected Reviews, and Index of Plates. Dorthea Tanning (1910-2012) was a seminal American artist in the surreal movement, her work spanning eight decades. Her painting, sculpture, printmaking, set design, costuming, and writing all pose complex questions about the na=ture of human form and subjective/objective contradictions.
