Near Fine octavo, 10 1/4" x 7 1/4". Hardcovers with one red cloth and one blue cloth, both with a black wraparound illustration, stamped gilt illustration to front panel, and silver and gilt lettering to spine. Light wear to tips, head, and tail of both volumes. Slight cocking to spine of Volume Two. Very Good slipcase in black paper, silver title label to spine with black lettering and illustration, minor bump to head, some shelf wear, and small tears to tips.
Beautifully designed two-volume edition of The Possessed (or Demons), one of the masterworks by the widely influential Russian existential novelist, Fyodor Dostoevsky, dealing with themes of political satire, nihilism, and good & evil. Both volumes include a list of names with basic descriptions of the novel's characters and Notes to each volume. Volume One: v-xxiv + 3-291 + xxvi-xxx pp. Features Part One in five chapters, and a portion of Part Two until chapter five "On the Eve of the Fête ." Volume Two: ix-x + 293-619 + xiv-xvi pp. Features Part Two continued from chapters six to ten, and Part Three with seven chapters, including the Conclusion. Includes the suppressed chapter "Stavrogin's Confession," translated by Avrahm Yarmolinsky. Accompanied by the twenty-four full-page, wood-engraved drawings by German-American illustrator and educator, Fritz Eichenberg. Includes an Introduction by Russian politician and literary critic, Marc Slonim. Translated by Constance Garnett. Signed by Eichenberg on the copyright page. The Monthly Newsletter, No. 311, is laid-in and present in Near Fine condition.
The Limited Editions Club was founded by publisher George Macy in 1929 with goal of delivering a monthly fine press edition of great works in literature, religion, history, philosophy, and poetry. The press worked with some of the best printers in the US and Europe, and sought the best artists to illustrate runs of 1500 or 2000 copies.
