Bright red cloth over boards, gilt lettering stamped to cover and spine, light sunning to spine, some minor rubbing and shelf wear, pen mark to corner of front cover, toning to some page edges, light staining in gutter at front and rear pastedown, glue staining around bookplate at front pastedown, else clean, tightly bound, and unmarked throughout.  Includes laid-in two stapled copies of the synopsis of the book, and one loose introductory note by the Author, each age toned and edgeworn, not affecting text. 123 pp. yellow and white paper, printed on front of pages only. Replete with black-and white photographs.  Eleven chapters plus Preface and Bibliography. The Author's note states that this book has been bound by the Author "as a testimonial to Ellen Browning Scripps for presentation to her near relatives and to the institutions and individuals who have aided in honoring her memory." This copy was presented to James S. Copley and bears his name on the cover and on the bookplate. James Strohn Copley was an American journalist and newspaper publisher of the San Diego Union and the San Diego Evening Tribune, and was President of the Inter American Press Association. In 1964, the Scripps Clinic renamed a vacant hospital The Copley Center after a $550,000 gift from James Copley. A well-researched and beautifully presented examination of the life of celebrated journalist, lauded philanthropist, and founding donor of several major institutions in Southern California, Ellen Browning Scripps.
