Complete House of Representatives edition in three volumes, rebound in quarter bound black leather and pebbled green paper covered boards, gilt stamped titles and raised bands to spine, marbling to all textblock edges, marbled endpapers, ex libris of wealthy Gilded Age landowner Herbert Wadsworth of Avon, New York to each front pastedown, small faint pencil signature to each title page.
Volume One: 90 lithograph plates, 2 foldout facsimiles of Japanese woodblock prints in vibrant full-color, 79 black-and-white woodcut illustrations within the text, 6 maps and charts. One plate "First Landing at Gorahama" bound incorrectly at page 272 instead of page 256 as noted in the list of illustrations. Lacking the notorious 'bathing scene' plate at page 408 which was excised from the majority of copies. Some splitting to front gutter, hinge still sturdy, bumping and slight crack to upper right front tip, but intact. Interior clean aside from minor scattered toning and foxing, 537 pp.
Volume Two: numerous lithograph plates (many hand-colored) focused on flora, fauna, and natural history including 6 plates of birds, 10 of fish, and 5 of shells w/ multiple additional black-and-white in-text woodcuts interspersed throughout.16 plates feature charts and diagrams of winds, currents, cyclones, and hurricanes. A 14-page facsimile of the Japanese language version of the U.S./Japan treaty with English translation is included, followed by 17 folded charts and maps bound at rear. Binding tight, interior clean w/ minor scattered spots, significant toning, foxing, and wrinkling to last few pages, 414 pp.
Volume Three: titled "Observations on the Zodiacal Light" by Rev. George Jones, 352 full page black-and-white wood engraved star charts w/ relevant notes on facing pages. Binding tight, interior clean w/ minor scattered spots, toning, and foxing to some pages, 706 pp.
A comprehensive narrative of the three-year mission led by Commodore Perry which resulted in the signing of a landmark treaty, contributed to the collapse of the previous feudal system, and essentially 'opened' Japan to the west. A handsome complete rebound set, in excellent condition, essential for any collection touching on Japanese history and culture.
