The 33 color plates depict each one of the compositions in _Heian_. Unpaginated, c. 83 pp., including plates and illustrations. A showcase of Seiju Toda's 33-composition series, _Heian_, which is the confluence of photography, sculptural assemblage, and Toda's unique approach to art-making. Each composition in _Heian_ includes a carefully crafted hinoki wood sculpture and actual living animals (namely, carp, silkworms, pigeons, crows, erucas (a type of Japanese caterpillar), bees, snakes, a ray, a rabbit, and a deer) or animals parts (frog eggs and venison). After making each artwork, Toda then enlisted the help of a photographer to take a photo of the composition. The animals (captured motionless through the photographic lens), soft lighting, and beautifully sculpted wood create an environment of meditative stillness and tranquility. Introductory essay by Vicki Goldberg. Back essay, "Seiju Toda: Career History," by Stuart Klawans and Seiji Toda. In this essay, Klawans gives brief commentary about the artist, and Toda talks about his art career over the years. Back essay concludes with printed color photos of some of Toda's "X-ray photography." Heavy and oversized items may require additional shipping.
