Published on the occasion of an exhibition of the same name at the Rena Bransten Gallery in San Francisco. The show featured paintings by Hung Liu (1948-2021), a Chinese-American artist, that were inspired by the photographs of Dorothea Lange. In this series, Liu referenced Lange's photos and added pops of bright color to the original compositions as a way to convey hope amid the hardships and bleakness of the Great Depression. Many of Liu's paintings directly reference historical photos to create a bridge between past and present and highlight recurring patterns of sociopolitical trauma throughout history. Essay by Maria Porges. Acquired from the private library of photorealist, Robert Bechtle and art historian, Whitney Chadwick. Heavy and oversized items may require additional shipping.
