Preface by Peter Selz, Professor Emeritus of Art History at UC Berkeley. 192 pp., including illustrations, Foreword, Preface, Notes, Bibliography, Chronology, and Index. John Register (1939-1996) was an American Photorealist whose influences included Ralph Goings and Richard Estes. His meditations on human spaces vacant of humans were an attempt to find “relatable stillness,” inviting the viewer to notice what emotions take up residence in an empty cafe corner or bus stop. Fun story: Register excused himself in the middle of a meeting at his high profile advertising job and just walked out to become a full-time painter, essentially telling the man to stick it. Elegant prose on Barnaby's part, evenly matched to the subjectmatter.
