Published on the occasion of an exhibition that featured the _French Collection Part 1_ which is part of the _French Collection_ series of narrative quilts by Faith Ringgold (b. 1930), an African-American artist and author. Ringgold has worked with painting, mixed-media sculpture, and performance art. She is perhaps best-known for her narrative quilts that address subjects such as slavery, racial discrimination, the Civil Rights Movement, African heritage and cultures, and the African-American experience in the United States. The _French Collection Part 1_ features eight narrative quilts. These eights quilts depict the story of a young African-American woman named Willia Marie Simone who, at the age of 16, travels to Paris in 1920 to become an artist. Ringgold says that while Simone is a fictional character, relevant topics relating to the African-American experience are interwoven in her story. First-person dialogue from Simone accompany illustrations of the quilts in this catalog. Introductory essay by Michele Wallace. Essay by Moira Roth. Acquired from the private library of photorealist, Robert Bechtle and art historian, Whitney Chadwick. Heavy and oversized items may require additional shipping.
