Flaubert, Gustave, Zurich, Switzerland: Fretz Brothers Ltd., 1938, #1058/1500, Very Good, 6” x 8 ½”, 8vo, 349 pp. Illustrated by Gunter Bohmer, SIGNED by Gunter Böhmer

Very Good octavo, bound in yellow silk fabric over soft boards, slight staining to spine, minor sunning to front and back cover, foxing to page edges, front pastedown with ex-libris sticker of Burwell Calahan, 349 pp. Illustrated with watercolor plates by Gunter Böhmer. Translation from French by Eleanor Marx Aveling. Introduction by André Maurois. A handsome copy of this 19th-century realist landmark, its unflinching portrayal of desire and disillusionment heightened by Gunter Böhmer’s delicate watercolor illustrations.

The Limited Editions Club was founded by publisher George Macy in 1929 with goal of delivering a monthly fine press edition of great works in literature, religion, history, philosophy, and poetry. The press worked with some of the best printers in the US and Europe, and sought the best artists to illustrate runs of 1500 or 2000 copies. Amatoria has acquired ~100 Limited Edition Club titles, to see more, visit the collection on our website.
