This is not a complete set. Some issues have the previous owner's address label to the front cover, others to the rear cover, some rubbing, minor chipping to edges, some light sunning, August 1948 and July 1949 covers are present but detached, February 1948 has a significant ink stain to cover not affecting interior. All issues are individually protected in plastic sleeves. Issues range in pagination, but each is approximately 25 pages, includes a wealth of information, some still very valuable, about the craft of writing, and replete with black-and-white images, advertisements, and classifieds directed at writers seeking publication. The Author & Journalist was founded in 1916 and ran regularly until 1969, existing as a trade journal alongside others like Writer's Digest. The original creator Willard E. Hawkins was a regular contributor to pulp magazines, and conceived this periodical as a writing technique instructional, and literary market and freelance magazine market guide for pulp and fiction writers. The cover of each issue boasts the author photo of one contributing writer and a basic list of contents including such articles as,"Writing Against the Law", "Self-help For Writers", "Your Character's Qualification Card", and "The Time To Revise is Before You Write", alongside recurring columns, The Student Writer, Literary Market Tips, and Mostly Personal.
