Castleman, Riva, and Henri Matisse. New York: George Braziller, Inc., 1984.
English, Near Fine, HC, Folio, 15 5/8" x 12 1/4", 146 pp.
ISBN: 0807610860

Hardcover reprint of 1947 edition by Edmond Vairel and Draeger Frères. Third printing of Braziller edition in black cloth, Near Fine blue pictorial dust jacket, navy blue cloth slipcase in Fine condition, and Good original cardboard box. Light dust stain to front board, otherwise clean interior, sharp tips, and tightly bound; light wear and small scuffs to front of dust jacket; some toning, puncture marks, tape residue and wear to box. 146 pp. Includes 22 full-page full-color lithographs of his colorful cut-out paper works accompanied by his handwriting in French; "Jazz: The Text" is also translated into English here. Often considered to be among Matisse's most notable works, Jazz is a radical act of joy in response to the dehumanization of fascism and WWII. Using emblems of happiness like the circus, mythology, and fairy tales, Matisse weaves in references to recent historic events and politics, his use of color acting as a defiant yes to life itself. A stunning book that closely mirrors the intensity of the originals, in excellent condition with slipcase and original packaging.
