Replete with sumptuous images of Pearlstein's early abstract watercolor landscapes on paper, many in full-color. Though Philip Pearlstein is known as one of the world's premier figurative realist watercolor painters, this exhibition focuses entirely on the early forays into color and abstract composition that would form his foundation. From Rosenblum's introduction: "...what we see here is not only a body of exuberant, adventurous work that mixed the energies of Abstract Expressionism with the intense scrutiny of nature, but also the slow revelation of the unexpected path Pearlstein staked out for himself, a cold-eyed, seemingly hard-hearted realism that completely renounced his origins." This catalog was published in conjunction with an exhibition of the artist's work held at the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio, March 8 to April 12, 1992.
