The exhibition featured the art made by Sam Gilliam during the final years of his life. Sam Gilliam (1933-2022) was an African-American painter who was associated with color field painting, Abstract Expressionism, lyrical abstraction, and the Washington Color School. Much of Gilliam's paintings and mixed-media art from the 1960s-1980s addressed the African-American experience and hardships endured by African Americans. In his later work, Gilliam incorporated unconventional media in his work such as metallic and iridescent acrylics, aluminum, computer-generated images, plastic, plywood, polypropylene, and steel. Text by Lowery Stokes Sims. Published by the Pace Gallery and David Kordansky Gallery. Heavy and oversized items may require additional shipping.
