First edition, first printing, Scribner’s ‘A’ symbol on copyright page. Decorations by Edward Shenton throughout. No dust jacket. Dark blue cloth, gilt title to spine, minor spots & cocking to spine, minor wear to tips, splitting to front gutter but still tight, front endpaper removed, descriptive text cut from rear panel of original dust jacket glued to front pastedown, bookseller stamp to lower front pastedown, scattered foxing & minor stains throughout. Overall a very handsome unique first edition copy of Fitzgerald's fourth and final novel.

Association: pencil ownership signature of David Stacton to front free endpaper along with his snarky critical comments on Fitzgerald in brown ink. David Stacton, born Arthur Lionel Kingsley Evans (1923-1968) was a prolific pulp novelist and poet and an openly gay and very flamboyant Bay Area personality. Born in San Francisco and graduate of Berklely, Stacton lived in Europe for a number of years and was widely published in the UK. He wrote challenging novels under the pseudonyms Carse Boyd, Bud Clifton, David Dereksen and David West.  Many of his novels were reissued in 2013. His notes on "Fitz" here provide an insight into his process as a reader after his fourth pass. A fun piece of queer history and a Fitzgerald classic both.
