Within Sutro Heights was the residence of Adolph Sutro (1830-1898), a German-American engineer and philanthropist and the 24th mayor of San Francisco. Sutro's sprawling estate included fountains, gardens, hedge mazes, and a plant conservatory. Sutro also built one of the versions of the famous Cliff House in Sutro Heights and the Sutro Baths just west of Sutro Heights.
