Mueller instructs readers on his own methods of making woodcuts and wood engravings. His instructions are accompanied by his illustrations. The latter half of the book is a textless showcase of his woodcuts, wood engravings, engraved vignettes and initials, and example book pages with his art. Back colophon: "Of this book, Woodcuts & Wood Engravings: How I Make Them, by Hans Alexander Mueller, there were made three thousand copies, and two hundred and fifty portfolios, by the Pynson Printers of New York; all the plates were made by the author and the printing completed in November MCMXXXIX." Front flap includes an appreciation of Mueller by fellow printmaker Lynd Ward.
